With academic roots stretching back to 1824, The University of Manchester is one of the most respected universities worldwide. Approximately 19,000 of our 46,000 students come from overseas – one of the largest international student communities of any UK university.
We have a long history of welcoming students from Taiwan, with approximately 250 Taiwanese students currently studying at the University.

Manchester
Our single-site campus is at the heart of the city of Manchester. Manchester is UK’s most popular student city – a buzzing and modern metropolis and an incredibly vibrant, cosmopolitan, friendly place to live and study.
Manchester has one of the most diverse populations in the UK with more than 200 languages spoken.
It is budget-friendly for international students as rent tends to be more reasonable than in many other locations. The many amenities are within walking distance of the campus with most of the shops, theatres, cafes and restaurants a short walk away.

Entry requirements
General minimum entry requirements for Taiwanese applicants are summarised below. Please carefully check the specific requirements for your chosen programme via our website prior to application.
A-levels/International Baccalaureate
If you are studying A-levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) then you can apply for direct entry to the first year of an undergraduate/bachelor’s degree.
Typical grade requirements:
- A-levels: A*AA – ABB
- IB: 34-38 points, with 7, 6, 6 – 6, 5, 5 in Higher Level (HL) subjects
Subject specific requirements may apply.
Taiwanese High School Diploma
Due to differences in the Taiwan and UK education systems, applicants who have taken the High School Diploma will need to successfully complete a University-recognised foundation programme before joining an undergraduate course.
Undergraduate courses with an integrated foundation year (science, engineering and biosciences only)
Students with 80% or higher, with a minimum of 80% in Mathematics and Physics, can apply for the University’s Science and Engineering with an integrated foundation year programme.
Applicants with HSD are considered for the University’s Biosciences with a foundation year programme on a case-by-case basis.
INTO Manchester in partnership with The University of Manchester
Students with an overall grade of 80% or higher would be considered for the foundation programmes run in partnership with the University by INTO Manchester. Pathways for Engineering and Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (including Management and Law), Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology are available. Subject-specific requirements may apply.

PG master’s courses (MSc, MA, MRes)
Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree at a recognised Taiwanese university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 / 4.0, are considered for postgraduate study. Some Schools and Departments may ask for higher.
Pre-requisites and additional requirements are specified on the programme descriptions.
MBA
The Manchester MBA requires a minimum of three years’ professional work experience.

The University of Manchester offers a range of one year master’s programmes that offer an attractive alternative to academically well-qualified students without suitable work experience.
PhD
Students with an undergraduate degree plus a master’s degree, both with a minimum GPA of 3/4.0 and from recognised Taiwanese universities, are considered for PhDs.
PhDs/Postgraduate research degrees are individually supervised. We strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or academic school before submitting a formal application. A research proposal is required along with your formal application.
English language requirements
All international students coming to study in the UK on a Tier 4 visa/Student Route visa are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English language. The minimum English language requirements for each programme are specified on the course description.
We accept a range of global English tests (eg IELTS, TOEFL iBT). For further guidance about evidencing English language proficiency, please contact the International Office or the relevant admissions team. Alternatively, consult our English language requirement webpages.

If you are currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at any accredited university or college of higher education outside of the UK, you can apply to spend a semester or full year here at The University of Manchester.
We offer year/semester abroad programmes as well as participating in a number of exchange partnerships with key European and worldwide universities. Most students joining us for study abroad do so in their third year (of a four-year degree) although we do also accept applications from second- and final-year students.
Minimum entry requirements for study abroad students are a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or average of 75% at a top university.

Global Futures Scholarships 2026
The University of Manchester is proud to offer more than 300 awards to international students starting their studies in September 2026. The total value of scholarships offered will be more than £6 million, and are open to students from Taiwan applying for master’s degrees.
Master’s awards
We're proud to offer merit-based master’s scholarships to prospective international students from a range of countries across the globe.
The value of the Global Futures Scholarships for students from Taiwan is £10,000; scholarships will be awarded as a discount on published overseas tuition fees.
Please note: the application form will only be made available once you've applied for a master’s course and been made an offer.
The £10,000 will be awarded based on academic excellence and the quality of your online application form.
Scholarships will be awarded as a discount on published overseas tuition fees.
- Applications will be considered from international fee-paying students domiciled in Taiwan.
- You must hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study a full-time, on-campus master’s course at The University of Manchester starting in September 2026, and submit an online scholarship application form by 23 April 2026. The form will be emailed to all eligible offer-holders.
- You'll be considered based on academic merit and the quality of your scholarship application.
- You must be self-funded (not sponsored).
Not eligible
- MBA, MPhil, Master of Architecture (MArch), Architecture and Urbanism (MA), Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Clinical Medicine and Dentistry degrees.
- Those who've studied a bachelor’s degree outside of Taiwan.

This enables us to ensure teaching and course content are relevant to the needs of industry and commerce so our graduates leave not just with academic knowledge but also with the transferable skills needed to be successful on their chosen career path.
At Manchester we are mindful of the concerns of prospective Taiwanese students regarding opportunities to improve career prospects by gaining work experience post-graduation in the UK. Our Careers Service has including the new which will offer Manchester graduates the possibility of staying in the UK for a further 18 months to work, or look for work, at any skill level. Many of our undergraduate programmes feature the opportunity for industrial/professional experience and the offers fantastic support to budding entrepreneurs.
